ANSTO partners with the Overwintering Project to promote shorebird awareness in schools!
Since 2018, the Australian Government scientific organisation ANSTO has run shorebird drawing competitions in conjunction with the Overwintering Project. This began in September 2018 when eight artists from Southern Sydney held an exhibition, The Overwintering Project: Bound for Botany Bay, at Hazelhurst Gallery, Gymea, NSW. One of the artists, Dr Stephanie McCready, is employed as an educational officer for ANSTO. With their support she organised an environmental awareness art competition for local primary school students. The competition aimed to encourage students to learn more about shorebirds and their local habitats, with ANSTO generously offering more that $3000 worth of educational resources as prizes. That competition ended up engaging with 26 local schools! Details are available at here: www.ansto.gov.au/whats-on/shorebirds-botany-bay-competition
Excitingly, the success of this competition led ANSTO to enter into a partnership with the Overwintering Competition, to run similar competitions in conjunction with future exhibitions. This began with a 2019 competition for students in Sydney and Melbourne to make a shorebird conservations poster. The results of this competition were announced at the Melbourne Synchrotron Open Day in October 2019, and two more competitions are scheduled to encourage student involvement with the upcoming Overwintering Project exhibitions at Coffs Harbour, NSW, and on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.
