The Wall of Wings is an international, community-based part of the Overwintering Project that is open to artists of all ages!
The Wall of Wings was initiated by NSW artist Penelope Lawry in 2019 as a way for artists and art groups to join the Overwintering Project, an environmental art project that unites artists around Australia to raise awareness our most endangered group of birds, migratory shorebirds, and their habitat. Penelope’s idea was to create a beautiful mass installation of swirling birds – a multi-species flock of the birds that connect the world!
In 2021, for the Wall of Wings: Oak Hill Gallery on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula we held another callout, and broadened the invitation to include international artists. Today works include original prints sent by over 250 individuals and 9 school groups from Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, USA, England, Scotland, Spain, Denmark, Hawaii, Ireland, Greece and Canada!
Any form of original print is accepted and the Wall of Wings includes linocuts, etchings, silkscreen prints, woodblock prints, lithographs, stencils, gelplate prints and monoprints. The species depicted are from all the Flyways, as migratory shorebirds the world over face the same challenges posed by development, disturbance and climate change, among others.
This installation will go on to be shown as part of future exhibitions to help raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds and their habitat.

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE:
The Wall of Wings is an international community-based art project designed to raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds. People of all ages and skills are invited to contribute cut-out prints of individual migratory shorebirds. These will be attached directly to the venue wall, thus creating a dynamic “wall of wings”. All contributed prints must depict migratory shorebirds e.g. migratory species of plover, sandpiper, godwit, curlew, knot etc. If you are in doubt about your bird’s classification or have any other questions, please contact me (overwinteringproject@gmail.com).
The Wall of Wings was initiated by artist Penelope Lawry as part of the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery Overwintering Project exhibition in 2019-20. More images of the Wall of Wings installations can be seen on Instagram using the hashtag #wallofwingsmigratoryshorebirds or on the Facebook page Wall of Wings – Migratory Shorebirds.

When in doubt, keep image plain and simple. Only migratory shorebirds will be accepted. Artists can contribute as many prints as they like but we ask for a minimum of three of each design to create a sense of the density of a flock

Size: No larger than 30cm in any dimension and no smaller than 12cm
Paper weight: Sturdy enough to be handled in repeated exhibitions. Recommended 180 gsm or higher.

Important: Your bird shape MUST be cut out! Please do not send bird with any surrounding or background image or paper, just the outside contour of the bird
Notation: Please print your name, the species of bird, and your location on the back of each print.
Acid free tape: If you have time, please stick some acid-free tape (e.g. acid-free sticky tape) to the back of the birds in a few spots. The prints are installed using blu-tac, and the tape makes it much easier to remove the blu-tac from the print without damaging the paper when we deinstall. It doesn’t have to cover the entire back of the print, just a few spots is plenty.
Species: Any migratory shorebird from any of the world’s flyways. Other migratory species will not be accepted. If you need to check if your chosen species IS a migratory shorebird, please email Kate overwinteringproject@gmail.com

History...
|
NSW artist Penelope Lawry initiated and co-ordinated the first Wall of Wings as a way for local artists and art groups to become part of the Overwintering Project exhibition held at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery over the summer of 2019-2020.
Artists were invited to contribute prints of individual migratory shorebirds which were then attached directly to the gallery wall. Together they formed a magificent Wall of Wings of the many species that visit the Coffs Coast over the summer. The Wall of Wings was created by local artists aged 6-94, some of whom had never done printmaking before! Nearly 400 birds were part of this community installation. Contributing groups included - Headspace Art Group, Nambucca Lands Council, Artlink, Coffs Coast Creative Arts Group, Coffs Coast Printmakers, Sawtell Art Group and Woolgoolga Art Group. |
