An international, community-based installation for artists of all ages!
The Wall of Wings is an international community-based art project designed to raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds. People of all ages and skills are invited to contribute cut-out prints of individual migratory shorebirds. These are attached directly to the venue wall, thus creating a dynamic “wall of wings”. All contributed prints depict migratory shorebirds e.g. migratory species of plover, sandpiper, godwit, curlew, knot etc.
The Wall of Wings was initiated by artist Penelope Lawry as part of the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery Overwintering Project exhibition in 2019-20. More images of the Wall of Wings installations can be seen on Instagram using the hashtag #wallofwingsmigratoryshorebirds or on the Facebook page Wall of Wings – Migratory Shorebirds.
The Wall of Wings is available for stand-alone installations for exhibitions and events, or can be an installation to accompany and Overwintering Project Print Portfolio exhibition.

A brief history:
2019: The Wall of Wings was initiated by NSW artist Penelope Lawry as a way to involve a broader range of artists and art groups in the Overwintering Project exhibition at Coff's Harbour Regional Art Gallery. Penelope’s idea was to create a beautiful mass installation of swirling birds – a multi-species flock of the birds that connect the world.
2021: The callout for the Wall of Wings installation at Oak Hill Gallery on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, a sister exhibition to the Overwintering Project exhibition at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, was broadened to include international artists, to reflect the fact that migratory shorebirds around the world face similar challenges and threats.
2022: The Wall of Wings: Hobson's Bay ay the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre in Altona was the biggest Wall of Wings yet! This exhibition featured prints by 222 individual artists and 5 schools, including contributions from artists in Australia, Mexico, England, the USA, Greece, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Spain and Scotland.
2023:
- prints from the 2022 Hobson's Bay exhibition were chosen to permanently decorate the new reading room at the Altona Meadows Library in Melbourne's west (see image below)
- we were invited by BirdLife Australia to install a Wall of Wings exhibition for the delegates of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership's Meeting of Partners in Brisbane
- The Wall of Wings decorated multiple venues in Brisbane to celebrate the premier of the film 'Flyways'
- The Wall of Wings was part of the inaugural Darwin-Garramilla Shorebird Festival (15-17 September)
2024:
- The Wall of Wings was exhibited on King Island, Tasmania as part of the Moonbird Festival; in Wodonga, Victoria as part of the Creators Artspace May Print Festival and at Glyph Gallery in Port Fairy, Victoria!
Today works include original prints sent by over 250 individuals and 9 school groups from Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, USA, England, Scotland, Spain, Denmark, Hawaii, Ireland, Greece and Canada!
Other past and upcoming exhibitions can be seen on the Exhibitions page.

Any form of original print is accepted, and the Wall of Wings includes linocuts, etchings, silkscreen prints, woodblock prints, lithographs, stencils, gelplate prints and monoprints. The species depicted are from all the Flyways, as migratory shorebirds the world over face the same challenges posed by development, disturbance and climate change, among others.
This installation will go on to be shown as part of future exhibitions to help raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds and their habitat.

Size: No larger than 30cm in any dimension and no smaller than 12cm

Acid free tape: If you have time, please stick some acid-free tape (e.g. acid-free sticky tape) to the back of the birds in a few spots. The prints are installed using blu-tac, and the tape makes it much easier to remove the blu-tac from the print without damaging the paper when we deinstall. It doesn’t have to cover the entire back of the print, just a few spots is plenty.
Species: Any migratory shorebird from any of the world’s flyways. Other migratory species will not be accepted. If you need to check if your chosen species IS a migratory shorebird, please email Kate [email protected]

The first Wall of Wings...
|
NSW artist Penelope Lawry initiated and co-ordinated the first Wall of Wings as a way for local artists and art groups to become part of the Overwintering Project exhibition held at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery over the summer of 2019-2020.
Artists were invited to contribute prints of individual migratory shorebirds which were then attached directly to the gallery wall. Together they formed a magificent Wall of Wings of the many species that visit the Coffs Coast over the summer. The Wall of Wings was created by local artists aged 6-94, some of whom had never done printmaking before! Nearly 400 birds were part of this community installation. Contributing groups included - Headspace Art Group, Nambucca Lands Council, Artlink, Coffs Coast Creative Arts Group, Coffs Coast Printmakers, Sawtell Art Group and Woolgoolga Art Group. |
